Banks and specialist lenders do finance servos, but they assess them differently from a home loan or a typical small business.
What lenders look at
- Earnings: the business's historical profit and how comfortably it covers repayments
- Your experience in fuel, convenience or retail management
- Lease and supply agreement terms. Lenders want the term to comfortably outlast the loan.
- Security: property (freehold) or business assets and goodwill (leasehold)
- Your deposit and other assets
Deposits
Leasehold purchases often need a substantial deposit, commonly 40–50% of the price, because goodwill is harder to lend against. Freehold purchases can need less because the property provides security. Every lender is different, so treat these as rough guides only.
